Communication Advisory - COVID-19

Attention:  Special Olympics Ontario Communities, Clubs, Volunteers, Athletes, Partners, Associates and Families

In consultation with our partners, volunteers and other Special Olympics programs across Canada, Special Olympics Ontario is directing that all local sport programs, competitions, fundraisers and any related activities be suspended effective immediately until March 31, 2020.
We will continue to monitor and evaluate the status of this pandemic and advise you on or before March 31 the next course of action based on the information coming from health and government professionals.

All members, please advise the Special Olympics Ontario office immediately at covid19@specialolympicsontario.com in the event that you test positive for the disease and/or if you are self-isolating.

2020 Regional Winter Games Meet - March 21-22 - CANCELLED COVID-19

Snowshoeing, Nordic Skiing, Curling and Swimming 
Event Date:  The 2020 Winter Regional Tournament for Swimming and Curling will be held Saturday March 21, 2020 and Nordic Skiing and Snowshoeing will be held on Sunday March 22, 2020.   
Entry Fee: The cost per athlete sport will be $35.00. The cost for each coach, parent and other caregivers/supporters will be $25.00 each.  The registration fee includes the Saturday Dinner/Dance and Saturday and Sunday lunch. If registered for Saturday and Sunday events, the registration fee will be reduced by $15. 
Registrations: Registration deadline is March 8, 2020. All teams must adhere to entry deadline. No late entries will be accepted.  
Curling: Competition and lunch will take place beginning at 9 am Saturday at Community First Curling Club, 124 Anita Blvd., P6B 4P9 
Snowshoeing: Competition will take place beginning at 9 am Sunday at Anna McCrea PS.

Skiing: Competition and lunch will take place beginning at 9 am Sunday at Hiawatha Highlands, 767A Landslide Rd, P6A 6J8 
Swimming: Competition and lunch will take place beginning at 9 am Saturday at John Rhodes Community Pool, 260 Elizabeth St., P6A 6J3 
Dinner and Dance: Dinner and Dance will take place Saturday at the Moose Lodge 543 Trunk Road P6A 3T1.  Dinner scheduled to be served at 6:00 pm, followed by a dance until 9:00 pm.

Sleigh of Wine Draw

Congratulations Gordon McCulloch (ticket number 709) for winning our Sleigh of Wine draw (licence # M834435)!  Our thanks to everyone for their support with this fundraiser  resulting in us raising over $3,400 to support our local Special Olympic Athletes!  

On behalf of our athletes we wish everyone a happy holiday season and all the best for 2020!

What an awesome Athlete Awards Banquet on Friday, October 18th, 2019.  After a terrific dinner put on by Grand Gardens, we announced the winners of the awards for each sport and the Athlete of the Year award and followed it all up with a dance with music by Red Velvet Foto!   And the winners are ....

2019 Annual Awards Banquet

October 18th, 2019 – Grand Gardens – Downtown Location

6:30 pm 

Tickets will be on sale at Registration for $25 per guest, parent or support person.  During the 2018-2019 year we were quite successful with our fundraising events and donations and we are able to offer our athletes Banquet Tickets at a cost of $10 each.  Newly registered athletes and volunteers are encouraged to attend to meet their peers!  Awards will be based on performance, attendance etc.  for the 2018-2019 athlete year.   Parents:  Athletes need to be picked up on or before 10 pm promptly, we will not be responsible for your athlete after 10 pm. 


We have a prize table at the Annual Awards Banquet and we are looking for prize donations.  If you can donate any prizes they can be brought on registration day or by contacting Joann at 705-542-5308 or emailing ssmspecialolympics@gmail.com.

If you are a new athlete with Special Olympics Sault Ste. Marie, please register on-line on the Special Olympics Ontario website  (https://www1.specialolympicsontario.com/get-involved/).  If you do not have access to a computer, contact our Registrar to obtain the necessary application form for completion.  Once your registration has been approved, you will be able to enroll in our sport offerings.

For returning athletes, you will be provided with a copy of your completed Athlete and Medical Information to verify at registration day.  It is important that you allow yourself some time to review this information so that our records will be more accurate.  If you have access to a computer and have an email address, you will be able to update your own information on-line in the future.  Directions on how to do this will be available at registration.

The additional cost to each athlete participating in regional competitions will be determined based on the cost of transportation, hotel fees and registration fees. The cost to each athlete selected to participate in provincial or national competitions will be set by Special Olympics Ontario at the time of the event.

On June 24th, the Esquire Club presented us with a $10,000 donation from their proceeds from their recent Catch the Ace fundraiser!  We are so pleased to be one of the charities selected by the Esquire Club.  There are many needs in our community and we encourage you to get out and support the Esquire Club Catch the Ace fundraisers when they start up again.

Terrific Twelve does Awesome at 2019 Winter Games

What an amazing weekend for all of our athletes and especially our 12 local athletes that were representing us at the games.  

Curling - Bronze Metal - Kristen Bonefant, Josh Chartrand, Vince Coccimiglio, Nathan and Shevy Harman.

Snowshoeing - Miguel Bedard with 2 bronze medals, Brandon Fortin with 1 gold and 1 bronze medal

Cross Country Skiing - Rob Lewis - 3 gold medals Quinn Pleau Macwilliam with Silver and Bronze, Rachelle Barbeau 1 gold and 3 silvers, Jason Lemcke 3 silvers and a bronze

Alpine Skiing - Carter Simpson - Gold medal. 

Great job Athletes.  We are very proud of you!
